Thousand Stars

Age: 8

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Notable Race Wins:-

Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle: 2010

With Willie Mullins already holding a strong hand in the Champion Hurdle with reigning champion Hurricane Fly, it is unlikely that Thousand Stars will embark on a season aiming for that come the Cheltenham Festival, so the Co. Carlow handler may send his seven-year-old over three miles this campaign.

Big Buck's may have dominated that sphere over the last few years, but there is certainly a chance that Thousand Stars could aim to take on the Paul Nicholls inmate in the World Hurdle and he is certainly a horse on the up.

After winning the 2010 Vincent O'Brien County Hurdle the gelding then locked horns with Hurricane Fly in the Rabobank Champion Hurdle and was not disgraced by his stablemate when finishing behind him.

Even though he didn't manage to venture into the winner's enclsoure last season, he ran some almighty races finishing second in both the 2011 Rabobank and Aintree Hurdle.

He has always been a horse that seems to lack that blistering turn of pace and showed in the two-and-a-half mile Aintree contest that the step up in distance may be the answer to getting back to winning ways.

If Mullins does indeed elect to send Thousand Stars over the longer trips for the 2011/2012 season then he is certainly a name to watch out for in Ireland and who's to say come the Cheltenham Festival in March he could be taking on the awesome Big Buck's in the World Hurdle.

Potential Races for 2011/2012 Season

World Hurdle

Form for 2011/2012 Season

  • 20/11/11 - Morgiana Hurdle - Punchestown (1st of 4 - SP 5/4 Fav) - A sublime lead-all-the-way performance from Thousand Stars in the Morgiana Hurdle saw his price slashed for the World Hurdle at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival.  Ruby Walsh sent his mount clear from the flag fall and the seven-year-old didn't see another rival as Oscars Well and Pittoni failed to get near him as he won by five-and-a-half lengths in an impressive display.
  • 29/12/11 - Istabraq Hurdle - Leopardstown (2nd of 7 - SP Evens Fav) - Sent off Evens favourite for the Grade One contest, Thousand Stars had to settle for second place, as he was dispatched with aplomb by Unaccompanied.  The grey was merely unable to quicken fast enough in the contest as Dermot Weld's raider showed a great turn of foot to edge otu his main rival.
  • 29/1/12 - Irish Champion Hurdle - Leopardstown (3rd of 5 - SP 11/2) - Handed another Grade One task, Thousand Stars was yet again found wanting as he failed to deal with classy stablemate Hurricane Fly, who stormed to success on his return to the racecourse.  Eventually finishing in third place, Thousand Stars is all set to be stepped up in trip as he looks to recapture some early season form
  • 15/03/12 - World Hurdle - Cheltenham (4th of 11 - SP 8/1) - It was always going to be a tough task to dethrone Big Buck's from his World Hurdle perch and Thousand Stars was unable to live with the staying sensation and eventually finished fourth in the Grade One.  Outpaced at the crucial point of the race, the grey plugged on, but failed to venture into the placings in another mediocre performance.
