Sprinter Sacre

Age: 7

Trainer: Nicky Henderson

Seldom does a novice chaser bring send a shiver down your spine, but that is exactly what Sprinter Sacre did during a sensational 2011/2012 campaign and now the Nicky Henderson-trained six-year-old will look to step out of the novice ranks and be a chasing revelation with the big boys.

Always labelled as a potential quality novice chaser by his Seven Barrows handler, racing aficionados weren't expecting such a dominant season and it was his demolition of the smart Peddlers Cross that really whet the appetitie.

He then went on to saunter to victory in the Game Spirit Chase before romping away with the Arkle Challenge Trophy in another mindblowing performance, before ending the campaign with another facile success in the Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree.

A phenomenal jumper of an obstacle, the gelding has already been installed as a short-priced favourite for the 2013 Queen Mother Champion Chase in March and if Henderson can continue to eke more improvement out of him then he will be a frightening prospect for a division that possesses some classy performers.

He could well take in the likes of the Victor Chandler Chase and Tingle Creek Chase en route to Prestbury Park, but one thing is for sure is that he is not a horse to miss and could be one of the greats if he can continue to progress an upward curve.

  • 08/12/12 - Tingle Creek Chase - Sandown Park (1st of 7 - SP 4/11 Fav) - Sprinter Sacre produced a mind-blowing performance on his comeback run as he trounced the classy Sanctuaire in a memorable renewal of the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown Park.  Having let his main rival go in the early stages, Barry Geraghty merely went up the gears in the closing stages and duly pulled clear of his rivals in dominant fashion to cement his place at the head of the Champion Chase market.
