Sir Des Champs

Age: 7

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Notable Race Wins:-

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Hurdle: 2011

Jewson Novices' Chase: 2012

Growise Champion Novice Chase: 2012

Willie Mullins has always had a soft spot for Sir Des Champs and the Co. Carlow master will be hoping that the 2012/2013 season can be a blue riband one for the six-year-old as he embarks on a potential Cheltenham Gold Cup campaign.

Bursting on to the scene at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival when coming from a mile back to win the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Hurdle, the Irish star was always going to shape into a smart chaser and Mullins was always certain that he could be a dominant force over the larger obstacles.

He headed into the 2012 Jewson Novices' Chase as a leading contender and he merely crushed his rivals to maintain his unbeaten record and then went on to win the Growise Champion Novice Chase at the Punchestown Festival in emphatic style.

Bookmakers immediately installed Sir Des Champs as a leading Cheltenham Gold Cup contender and if he can continue on an upward curve then he will certainly be a major player in what will be a fascinating market over the next few months.  He could well take in a couple of Irish contests before looking to bag his third Cheltenham Festival and he may be seen in the Irish Hennessy before heading to Prestbury Park.

Form For 2012/2013 Season

  • 09/12/12 - John Durkan Memorial Chase - Punchestown (2nd of 3 - SP 5/4) - Even though Sir Des Champs suffered his first defeat in the John Durkan, Willie Mullins wasn't too disheartened as he was beaten by a race-fit Flemenstar over a distance shorter than ideal.  Stalking his market rival from the flag fall, the dual Cheltenham Festival winner was outpaced in the closing stages and was eventually beaten by five lengths
  • 28/12/12 - Lexus Chase - Leopardstown (4th of 9 - SP 9/4) - Sir Des Champs may have finished fourth in the Lexus Chase, but he wasn't disgraced as he stayed on very eye-catchingly in the closing stages and will relish the step up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.  He produced some disappointing jumps during the contest, but was staying on at the finish and is one for the notebook.
