Age: 5

Trainer: Paul Nicholls

Notable Race Wins:-

JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial: 2011

Sam Winner burst on to the national hunt scene with a mouthwatering success in a JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham annihilating Grandouet by 15 lenghts.  He further enhanced his reputation on his second start for Paul Nicholls with another simple victory before he got bogged down at a muddy Chepstow to lose his unbeaten record.

Sent off favourite for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, the four-year-old was always out the back and Ruby Walsh could not get hims going until it was too late.  However, the way he stormed home to finish fourth in the Friday opener showed his ability and he certainly has lots of improvement in him.

He didn't perform at Aintree on his final outing, but it's likely Nicholls will send him over fences this year and he certainly is one to keep an eye on.  With both the Arkle Trophy and RSA Chase possible assignments it will certainly assist the gelding to be going a stride slower over the fences.

If he takes to the larger obstacles then he certainly will be a player in the novice chasing scene and the bookmakers agree having towards the head of the market in both the aforementioned Cheltenham Festival novice races.

Possible Races for 2011/2012 Seaon

OUT FOR THE SEASON

Form for 2011/2012 Season

  • 01/11/11 - Betfred Goals Galore Novices' Chase - Exeter (Fell - SP 6/4) - Jumping left-handed throughout, it was a lacklustre performance from Sam Winner as he struggled to find a rhythm over his fences.  After Menorah had fell at the second last, Nicholls' runner was left in front, but crumpled on landing at the final fence to top off an extremely disappointing debut over fences for the Ditcheat team.
  • 09/12/11 - Ryman Stationery Cheltenham Business Club Novices' Chase - Cheltenham (Fell - SP 11/8) - Jumping far more efficiently than on his debut, it was a shock when he tumbled down the far straight and it has later been announced that he suffered a fracture of his off fore knee and will miss the rest of the season.
