Mildmay Novices' Chase History

The Mildmay Novices' Chase is a Grade One race run over three miles, one furlong at Aintree's Grand National meeting for horses aged five years or older.

Established in 1981, the race ignited from the outset with the inaugural winner Bregawn using the race as a stepping stone for bigger and better things as Michael Dickinson's raider went on to lift the Cheltenham Gold Cup later on in his career and it was a feat emulated the following year by 1982 winner Burrough Hill Lad.

Often attracting a stellar field, the race usually sees a plethora of Cheltenham Festival runners line up and mostly ones who have competed in the RSA Chase at the Prestbury Park extravaganza.

It has always unearthed future national hunt stars and Jenny Pitman's Royal Athlete won the 1990 running before going on to win the coveted Grand National crown in 1995 to enhance this race's roll of honour.

Bradbury Star and Barton are just another eyecatching couple of names in the illustrious history of the race, whilst in 2008 a certain Big Buck's was victorious in the race before he returned to the hurdling game to dominate that division with aplomb by notching several World Hurdle crowns at Cheltenham.

In short, this race is one of the leading staying novice chases of the entire jumping calendar and no doubt he will continue to unearth future Cheltenham Festival stars and provide Gold Cup and Aintree Grand National winners aplenty.
