William Hill Lincoln Handicap - 29th March, 2014

Roger Charlton's Captain Cat was fancied by many to land the William Hill Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster on Saturday, but the news broke on Friday morning that the classy performer wouldn't take his chance due to the rain that had hit Town Moor, so the race has certainly lost one of its premier challengers.

However, there will be a number of classy performers heading to the one-mile start and Richard Fahey's Gabrial's Kaka is a prominent figure in the betting and he was an improver last year and on his last start finished a cracking second at York and has to be given the utmost respect in this event.

Levitate was a fine winner of the race 12 months ago and he will aim to retain his crown, whilst Andrew Balding's Tullius showed when landing the Group Three Sovereign Stakes last season that on his day he can produce the goods and he has to be regarded as a major player in a devilishly difficult conundrum.

David Simcock's Whispering Warrior was victorious in the Lincoln Trial on the all-weather at Wolverhampton and if he can use that as a catalyst for more success here can come into calculations, whilst Consign will look to make the most of carrying a light weight and he has to be respected.

Of the others, Off Art and Chookie Royale will be another brace of leading challengers for a race that will kickstart what is set to be a stunning Flat season over the next few months and this contest will just excite those looking to decipher these tough betting heats.

William Hill Lincoln Handicap History

The William Hill Lincoln Handicap is a race run at Doncaster over one mile for horses aged four years or older.

Established in 1853, this race is traditionally the curtain-raiser to the flat season and is an ultra-competitive contest which takes place at the end of April or beginning of May.  It interestingly makes up the 'Spring Double' along with the Grand National, which usually takes place a fortnight before.

Attracting a stellar field annually it often sees some of the best mile handicappers in the business doing battle with fields in excess of 20 lining up every season.

In recent years, Paul Cole has had a tremendous record in the race and between 1997 and 2001 he managed to train the winner three times with Kuala Lips bagging his first title with Nimello recording his last.

It was always a tough race for favourites and during the 1980s and 1990s only one favourite prevailed with John Dunlop's Right Wing bagging glory at 9/2 favourite in the 1999 renewal.

However, more recently there have been a number of market leaders take the prize with John Gosden's Expresso Star and William Haggas' well-backed Penitent bagging glory in the 2009 and 2010 renewals, respectively.
