Peddlers Cross

Age: 7

Trainer: Donald McCain

Notable Race Wins:-

Fighting Fifth Hurdle: 2011

Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle: 2010

Mersey Novices' Hurdle: 2010

Peddlers Cross went to the 2011 Champion Hurdle as one of the UK's leading contenders following an unbeaten campaign leading up to the Cheltenham Festival, but Donald McCain's stable star just found Hurricane Fly too good on the day and had to settle for second place.

A quality juvenile he had amassed seven victories in his early career leading up to the 2011 Champion Hurdle, which saw him win the Neptune Investment Managament Novices' Hurdle at the 2010 Festival as well as brushing off 2010 champion hurdler Binocular in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle.

However, the excellent Willie Mullins inmate was far superior in Tuesday's blue riband event and he just got edged out before disappointing at Aintree the following month.

Now destined to be sent over fences by McCain the six-year-old will be a fascinating recruit to the chasing game and the bookmakers agree by making him ante-post favourite for the 2012 Arkle Challenge Trophy.

With McCain likely to find him some relatively easy assignments en route to Prestbury Park, Peddlers Cross could be the one they all have to beat come the day of reckoning in mid-March.

Form for 2011/2012 Season

  • 09/11/11 - Golden Bear Beginners Chase - Bangor-on-Dee (1st of 3 - SP 1/8 Fav) - A fairly straightforward assignment for Peddlers Cross on his chasing debut, but the former Champion Hurde runner-up still had to take to the larger obstacles and he did so with aplomb.  Never stretched by his inferior rivals, Timmy Murphy merely cajoled him round Bangor-on-Dee and he produced an exemplary round of jumping to get his novice chasing season off to the perfect start.
  • 26/11/11 - Malise Nicolson Bright Future Novices' Chase - Bangor-on-Dee (1st of 5 - SP 2/13 Fav) - Another impressive performance from Peddlers Cross will leave connections excited about what the season should hold.  A faultless round of jumping has seen him cement his place at the head of the Arkle Challenge Trophy betting and if he can continue to improve will surely be the one to beat.
  • 26/12/11 - Wayward Lad Novices' Chase - Kempton Park (2nd of 3 - SP 10/11 Fav) - His first major test over fences and Peddlers Cross was well beaten by the classy Sprinter Sacre in the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase.  Donald McCain has eluded that his star may have been put off by a first fence mistake, but he was trounced by Nicky Henderson's hotpot and will need to improve if he is to turn the tables come the Arkle.
  • 15/03/12 - Jewson Novices' Chase - Cheltenham (8th of 10 - SP 5/2 Fav) - Handed the task of the 2m 4f Jewson Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival instead of the 2m Arkle, Peddlers Cross hugely disappointed favourite backers as he couldn't live with the classy Sir Des Champs.  Gradually being shuffled back down the pack in the closing stages, McCain's raider eventually trailed in eighth having never looked a likely contender to challenge the principles.
