Master Minded will be one of the most intriguing runners of the new national hunt season as Paul Nicholls looks to send his stable star over the longer trips.  Already a champion over the minimum two mile trip with a brace of successes in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, the eight-year-old is now destined to face a 2011/2012 campaign beyond the minimum distance.

Likely to be seen in the Amlin 1965 Chase over two-and-a-half miles, it will then be all systems go for a tilt at the 2011 King George VI Chase on Boxing Day at Kempton Park if the Ascot outing goes to plan.

A first attempt at three miles, he is destined to face the leading staying chasers from the UK & Ireland including the reigning Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Long Run, who is ante-post favourite for the contest.

Nicholls has already eluded that he is not 100% sure whether the Clive Smith-owned runner will be able to land a blow over the longer distances, so it's just a waiting game to see if he can perform.

If he were to run admirably in the King George then who's to say that he wouldn't be seen taking over the Ditcheat baton from Messrs Kauto Star and Denman in the 2012 Gold Cup and it could pathe his way to racing greatness and etch his name alongside the leading national hunt horses of all time.

Potential Races for 2011/2012 Season

OUT FOR THE SEASON

Form for 2011/2012 Season

  • 22/10/11 - Old Roan Chase - Aintree (3rd of 3 - SP 2/5 Fav) - Sent off a short-priced favourite, Master Minded struggled to land a blow in the Grade Two contest and eventually finished last of three with Albertas Run bagging victory for Jonjo O'Neill.
  • 19/11/11 - Amlin 1965 Chase - Ascot (1st of 6 - SP 2/1 JF) - Master Minded was back to his best in the Amlin 1965 Chase as he battled to a three length success over Somersby.  Having travelled a lot better than in the Old Roan Chase, Daryl Jacob got busy in the saddle and reeled in Somersby to win comfortably and stay on track for the King George VI Chase.
  • 26/12/11 - King George VI Chase - Kempton Park (PU - SP 11/2) - All eyes would've been on Kauto Star at the end of the King George, but in the aftermath they turned to Master Minded, who pulled up sharply mid-race with what was now known as a career-threatening injury.  A severed tendon mid-race has left his career in the balance and the dual Champion Chaser will not be seen again this season.
