Long Run

Age: 7

Trainer: Nicky Henderson

Notable Race Wins:-

Cheltenham Gold Cup: 2011

King George VI Chase: 2011

Feltham Novice's Chase: 2009

Having come over to the UK from France with a huge reputation Long Run instantly showed his class when romping to success in the 2009 Feltham Novice's Chase at Kempton Park and then enhanced his glowing CV with another imperious performance in the Kingmaker Novice's Chase at Warwick.

Nevertheless, Cheltenham became his nemesis as a five-year-old, as disappointments in the RSA Chase and the Paddy Power Gold Cup left shrewd critics doubting his credentials at the highest level and especially at Prestbury Park.

However, his win in the 2011 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, beating dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star, showed he certainly was a force to be reckoned with at the top level and was a potential superstar for the Nicky Henderson yard.

Sent off favourite for the 2011 Gold Cup, Sam Waley-Cohen gave him a top notch ride stalking veterans Kauto Star and Denman and merely jumped to the front down the home straight to etch his name into racing history and bag the blue riband event.

Now likely to head to the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park in his seasonal reappearance, the six-year-old is already a short-priced favourite for the 2012 King George VI Chase and also heads the market for the Gold Cup as he looks to retain his title.

Form for 2011/2012 Season

  • 19/11/11 - Betfair Chase - Haydock Park (2nd of 6 - SP 6/5 Fav) - Sent off a short-priced favourite for the Betfair Chase, Long Run was expected to kick off the new campaign how he finished the last one, but things didn't go to plan for the Gold Cup hero.  Stalking Kauto Star, the six-year-old made some jumping errors down the back straight and Sam Waley-Cohen was unable to get his mount back into the race and Kauto Star stormed to an eight length success wtih Long Run having to settle for the silver medal.
  • 26/12/11 - King George VI Chase - Kempton Park (2nd of 7 - SP Evens Fav) - Another clash with Kauto Star another defeat.  The reigning Gold Cup hero had to settle for second place in the King George behind the evergreen Kauto Star as Nicky Henderson's star yet again failed to sparkle on the big stage.  Just like Haydock Park, the six-year-old didn't show his best over the fences and even though he battled up the run-in couldn't get passed the Ditcheat wonder horse and will need to improve if he is to retain his Cheltenham title.
  • 17/02/12 - Denman Chase - Newbury (1st of 5 - SP 4/7 Fav) - A first win of the season for Long Run would certainly have come as a relief for fans of the reigning Gold Cup champion, but he was far from impressive by dispatching of stablemate Burton Port narrowly.  However, it will get him primed for another duel with Kauto Star in the 2012 Gold Cup on March 16 and it should be a cracker.
  • 16/03/12 - Cheltenham Gold Cup - Cheltenham (3rd of 14 - SP 7/4 Fav) - Another reigning champion who lost his crown, Long Run failed to emulate his 2011 heroics in the Cheltenham Gold Cup as he was beaten into third place by Synchronised and The Giant Bolster.  Henderson's raider was never travelling with ease and even though he came to challenge at the last two fences, he failed to pick up like he did 12 months ago and was outstayed by his rivals and had to settle for the minor honours.
