Hurricane Fly

Age: 8

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Notable Race Wins:-

Champion Hurdle: 2011

Irish Champion Hurdle: 2011, 2012

Rabobank Champion Hurdle: 2010, 2011

Hurricane Fly has always had the potential to be an absolute superstar, but a career plagued by injuries in his youth somewhat curtailed his development as a youngster, but an injury-free 2011 saw him dominate the 2m hurdle scene.

A top class novice, Willie Mullins' stable star was a revelation following his move from France as he notched up a plethora of Grade One novice hurdles in Ireland.  However, following a narrow win in the 2010 Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown, the son of Montjeu picked up a niggling injury and had to miss the Cheltenham Festival and missed the chance of taking on the best the UK had to offer

Nevertheless, 2011 was to be his time as he ventured over the Irish Sea to the Cheltenham Festival following an easy win in the Irish Champion Hurdle.  He merely annihilated a strong Champion Hurdle field at Prestbury Park beating the very smart Peddlers Cross before going to the Punchestown Festival to retain his Rabobank Champion Hurdle title.

Now looking towards the 2011/2012 campaign, Hurricane Fly looks the star attraction in the 2m hurdle division and is already a short-priced favourite for the 2012 Champion Hurdle.  If he can have another injury-free season the seven-year-old could cement his place in history as one of the leading speed hurdlers of his generation.

Form for 2011/2012 Season

  • 29/01/12 - Irish Champion Hurdle - Leopardstown (1st of 5 - SP 4/5 Fav) - Doubters who feared Hurricane Fly would need the run in his first run of the season were left eating their words, as Hurricane Fly produced a mesmerising performance to retain his Irish Champion Hurdle title, beating Oscars Well by six-and-a-half lengths.  Stalking stablemate Thousand Stars, the eight-year-old was merely sent to the front with ease and pulled clear to cement his place at the head of Champion Hurdle betting.
  • 13/03/12 - Champion Hurdle - Cheltenham (3rd of 10 - SP 4/6 Fav) - Hurricane Fly failed to retain his Champion Hurdle crown as he had to settle for third place behind Rock On Ruby and Overturn in a cracking renewal.  Kept out the back by Ruby Walsh, Willie Mullins' raider gradually worked his way through the field, but failed to reel in Rock On Ruby who had burst clear turning for home.
