Grandouet

Age: 5

Trainer: Nicky Henderson

Notable Race Wins:-

AES Champion 4-Y-O  Hurdle: 2011

After a fairly slow start to his career Grandouet improved immeasurably as last season progressed and was one of the leading fancies going into the JCB Triumph Hurdle having breezed to success in an Ascot juvenile hurdle.

However, Nicky Henderson's four-year-old just came up short in the Cheltenham Festival contest and had to settle for third place behind the classy duo Zarkandar and Unaccompanied.

He then headed to Aintree for the Matalan 4-Y-O Juevnile Hurdle, but was brought down two hurdles from home when looking to launch a challenge on eventual winner Zarkandar down the home straight.

Nevertheless, he gained a well-deserved top level success in the AES Champion 4-Y-O Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival comfortably beating the Alan King-trained Kumbeshwar by nine lengths to bag his first Grade One success.

Now likely to embark on a second season over hurdles, the Henderson inmate has already been labelled as one of the potential up-and-coming stars who could challenge Hurricane Fly for the 2012 Champion Hurdle crown at the Cheltenham Festival and he is definitely one to watch.

If Henderson can build on his Grade One success at the back end of last season then there is no doubt he could be a contender for the March contest and is certainly one to keep on the right side of.

  • 05/11/11 - Elite Hurdle - Wincanton (Fell- SP 8/13 Fav) - Grandouet was given a stern test on reappearance with Celestial Halo turning the Elite Hurdle into a big test of stamina.  However, the four-year-old was looking ominous when coming upsides the Paul Nicholls-trained runner, but fell two fences from home in a disappointing return to the track.  Neverthless, the way he travelled during the race would certainly not put you off him for potential big prizes this campaign.
  • 19/11/11 - Betfair Hurdle - Haydock Park 1st of 5 - SP 8/13 Fav) - After suffering a crashing fall in the Elite Hurdle, Grandoeut was looking to bounce back to form and Nicky Henderson's emerging star duly delivered with a magnificent performance in the Betfair Hurdle.  Hardly breaking sweat, Barry Geraghty stalked the leaders and went to the front two flights from home and the four-year-old sauntered home by eight lengths to become a lively contender for the 2012 Champion Hurdle.
