Don Cossack

Age: 6

Trainer: Gordon Elliott

Notable Race Wins:-

Irish Form Book Future Champions Flat Race (Grade 2): 2012

Gordon Elliott has always held Don Cossack in high regard and the five-year-old will be looking to prove his trainer right in the 2012/2013 season as he embarks on a campaign that could see him end up battling out for supremacy in the 2013 Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Three wins out of four in bumpers immediately saw him propel to ante-post favourite for the Festival curtain-raiser, but he will need to show the same class over timber if he is to be touted as a potential Supreme winner, but going into the new campaign he has all the makings of a high class novice.

Having finished fifth on debut, he was then sent to Naas where he broke his maiden tag, before securing a one-and-a-half length success in the Grade Two Irish Form Book Future Champions Flat Race at Navan which saw him catch the eye of many shrewd judges.

However, it was his facile 17-length success at Fairyhouse in April that well and truly stormed the son of Sholokhov into the limelight and Nina Carberry was ebullient about his potential for the novice hurdle campaign and he is one for the notebook.

Davy Russell is another who has spoken highly about his potential and he certainly knows a good horse when he sits on one, so for the novice hurdling scene, Don Cossack is one to watch out for in what could be a make-or-break season for the Irish star.

Form For 2012/2013 Season

  • 25/11/11 - I.N.H Stallion Owners E.B.F Maiden Hurdle - Navan (1st of 15 - SP 3/10 Fav) - Gordon Elliott couldn't have been any more excited about Don Cossack's potential over timber, as the classy bumper performer stormed to a facile nine-and-a-half length victory on his hurdling debut at Navan.  Jumping with real fluency from the outset, the five-year-old gradually pulled clear of his inferior rivals and even though there will be tougher tasks ahead, he is a major player in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle betting.
  • 16/12/12 - Navan Novice Hurdle - Navan (Fell - SP 8/15) - A disappointing performance from Don Cossack saw his price drift in the Supreme market, as he suffered a crashing fall when beaten behind the eye-catching Pont Alexandre.  Turning for home he looked to have his work cut out, as Willie Mullins' raider went clear and he Don Cossack stumbled at the last flight and sent Davy Russell over the top, but he should bounce back.
