BBC Horse Racing Presenters

Live horse racing on the BBC maybe a rarity now during the season, but when the terrestrial channel does show some action they certainly provide the viewer with a first class show help by an array of top presenters and pundits.

Take a look at some of the horse racing presenters who broadcast live from the track.

Clare Balding

Clare Balding is the main presenter of BBC horse racing and is an integral part of the broadcasting team.  Born into racing with father Ian being a top trainer, Balding was a leading amateur jockey before leaving the saddle for the screen.

A regular on BBC Five Live, Balding's love for horse racing comes through in her broadcasts and next to her sidekick Willie Carson during the flat season, she helps inform the public of the latest developments from the track.

Willie Carson

Ex-Derby winning jockey Willie Carson was an instant hit when he moved over to horse racing broadcasting.  His cheeky chappy approach twinned with his knowledge of the game enhances the coverage considerably.

Known for standing on a box next to Clare Balding, the diminutive Carson often gives the views of the jockeys as well as regularly offering advice to viewers on the horses parading.

Jim McGrath

Australian Jim McGrath is the race commentator for the BBC who has called some of the biggest races in recent times on the channel.

Taking over from the great Peter O'Sullevan was no easy job, but McGrath has bedded into the commentator's seat with aplomb and is now seen on every broadcast providing top notch commentaries.

John Parrott

John Parrott is usually seen walking round a snooker table, but the former World Champion cueist is now regularly seen alongside Gary Wiltshire in the betting ring.

Parrott has grown into the position and now provides the viewers with the latest news from the bookmakers and informs if any betting gambles are taking place.

Gary Wiltshire

Larger than life character Gary Wiltshire is an excellent addition to the BBC horse racing team.  Notorious for losing a millon pounds during Frankie Dettori's magnificent seven at Ascot, Wiltshire is now seen roaming the betting ring with John Parrott.

As an ex-bookmaker Wiltshire provides the viewers with expert knowledge of the betting ring, as well as occasionally having a joke with some of the bookmakers.

Ian Bartlett

Ian Bartlett has been working in the horse racing broadcasting business for decades and is now seen in two areas at the BBC.

For most of the season he is reviewing races that have just run trying to analyse the events, whilst he is also seen occasionally commentating on the Grand National alongside Jim McGrath.

Kevin Darley

Ex-flat jockey Kevin Darley has been a recent addition to the BBC horse racing team and is now seen reviewing races alongside Ian Bartlett.  Being an ex-jockey Darley is able to inform the viewer of certain aspects from a jockey's point of view and this helps provide a balanced review of the races.
